A new approach to community policing.
The Peace Officer Framework is a new approach for community policing that positively shapes both the community and the department consisting of two components. The external components are the PEACE OFFICER markings on vehicles, uniforms and other equipment which are used to signal to the public that the department intends change. The internal components are the tools which the department uses to convey the meaning of PEACE OFFICER and operationalize this approach throughout its organization.

The Police-Community/Youth Dialogues Program is a 3.5 – 5 hour, facilitated conversation between members of the community, their youth and law enforcement officers. Through direct dialogue and dynamic interactions, layers of prejudice, stereotypes, bias, fear and mistrust are dismantled to help groups find common ground and building trust.

Post-traumatic stress disorder is a serious condition, and cumulative PTSD can be even more debilitating than PTSD resulting from a single trauma. As a means of better educating its officers about the symptoms associated with PTSD, the Richland County Sheriff’s Dept. (RCSD) in South Carolina has published a one-pager addressing cumulative PTSD. The sheet is being disseminated beyond the near-1,000-employee agency it was originally designed for nearly two years ago

In the wake of nationwide demonstrations over police misconduct, there is a growing trend to employ mental health providers in addition to, or instead of, law enforcement, for emergency responses to psychiatric crises. One of the longest-running and most well-known programs in the nation is called CAHOOTS, or Crisis Assistance Helping Out on the Streets.
